This is a difficult question for me to answer – I am not a specialist in this area of science! Might be better to ask an archeologist or an anthropologist about this 🙂
My guess would be that the first inventions were the stone tools which prehistoric societies used for various purposes – they could serve as weapons, could be used to hunt animals or process materials to make clothes, prepare food and build the living spaces. The next great early invention would be fire – we are so dependent on it now that we don’t even think that somebody had to invent it! But it allowed humans to heat themselves up and start to move and settle in the colder parts of the world, as well as to produce new materials (and invent some delicious food!).
