A science consultant is a person who helps to make sure all of the science in books and films and comics makes sense. You might notice that a lot of the films you watch have made-up science in them. For instance, think about Jurassic Park – we can’t quite build a living dinosaur from scratch yet! But a science consultant helps to make sure that you can believe the science you see – so if I were working on Jurassic Park, I would tell them that their dinosaurs would have a lot more feathers in real life! Did you know that most dinosaurs actually had quite a lot of feathers and probably looked a bit like birds with teeth?
A science consultant is a job where an expert on a certain topic offers his/her advice against pay. They will be able to guide companies or other teams if they themselves don’t know enough about a topic.
To work as a consultant on a certain scientific subject you will need to be able to prove that you are an expert in that field. So usually more experienced scientists would be the ones working as a science consultant.
