I don’t actually work so much with cancer treatments in my job but I do need to learn about some of them to understand the tests that we do in our lab. There are many different kinds of cancer treatments and they all work in slightly different ways so there’s always lots for me to learn. In science it’s important to stay on top of things – new drugs are being developed every day and we need to keep updating our knowledge by reading articles, going to meetings and conferences. For my job it’s important to know about some cancer drugs because more and more of them are designed to act on very specific changes in our cells. So from our side of things, we need to design tests which can detect those changes quickly and accurately – so that we can find all patients who have cancer cells with that change and give them correct treatment.
