I used to be a little scared of some of the cells and chemicals I worked with. I did experiments on cancer cells and often worked around radiation, or around a chemical called ricin, which is extremely toxic. But we have a lot of safety precautions and protective gear in science. If you use the correct tools and equipment at all times, you can keep yourself safe!

I get scared that one day I may make a serious mistake that could harm someone. My job has a bit of responsibility in that if I do something wrong, patients may get wrong results and not get the best treatment for their disease. But our lab has many precautions to prevent such mistakes from happening. For example, we always have to get another scientist to check that we have added things to patients samples in correct order, that everything is labelled correctly and also that our analysis doesn’t have any mistakes in it. Every report that we send to the doctor to tell them about the patient’s results also has to be checked by a registered clinical scientist.
