Imagine you close your eyes. Scan your pointing finger over the surface in front of you. Try to understand the objects your finger is moving over. How much do you need to raise your hand to get past the object? How does the object feel? Is it hard, soft, slippery or sticky?
I try to understand the properties of surfaces at very small scales. Instead of my finger, I use a pointy needle that is sharper than the end of our hair. Understanding surfaces at small sizes is used in many applications. It helps to discover materials that can make our phones faster. It is even used to make chocolate melt nicer in our mouths!

My Typical Day:
I get into work and start my computer. Then I check the internet for relevant science news and discoveries. After that I usually start doing measurements on my microscope. When I have completed my measurements, I like to look at the images and understand what I am seeing.
-
What I'd do with the prize money:
I would like to donate the prize money to a charity. Sense about Science is a charity that works against misinterpretation of science. I would like to financially support them to keep up the fantastic work.
