Using the same techniques that are used for making computer chips, we design and make very small scale devices which will be used to turn laser beams on and off in a so-called ‘Quantum sensor’ which can detect objects underground by measuring very small changes in the strength of gravity.

My Typical Day:
First thing is to check if I have any emails and check my calendar to see if I have any scheduled things to do for the day. Then I go into the lab to continue working on the devices. The lab is a ‘clean room’ which is a specially designed room for keeping dust and any other particles out. This means I have to put a special plastic suit and gloves on before I can go in. Since the devices we make have such small features, if there was any dust on them it would ruin the process we use to make them so we always have to make sure we keep everything spotless.I usually spend most of the day in the clean room working with a lot of different equipment.
